I just saw a great documentary called I.O.U.S.A., about America's debt problems. It is fantastic and lays it out in very plain terms: the history of our national debt, four deficits, including a leadership deficit, and the mechanics of the current situation.
Almost fifty percent of our publicly held debt is held by foreign residents.
The last time we have zero debt was the 1830s.
The Civil War was the first time our debt ballooned.
Generally, wars and public works initiatives tend to skyrocket our debt.
It is a fantastic documentary and prominently features our current Comptroller going on tours across the country with other concerned non-partisan groups to alert the voting population to the issue.
It's a problem that can be solved, but will require effort.Go see this! I'm sure it will get picked up.
